Uplink Unveiled

September 27th, 2007

I received word this morning from my former boss at Investigative Reporters and Editors that my biggest project for the summer, creating a Web site for Uplink magazine, recently launched. This was a large undertaking that took many, many weeks to complete, wait for approval, make changes, etc.

The vast majority of what you see is my doing. I worked with IRE’s print designer to help maintain consistent branding, but obviously a large amount of the design had to be adapted to work on the Web. The site is utilizes XHTML, CSS, and XML-driven Flash.

Since I left IRE in August, one of the Web designers took my project under her wing. She rolled out an RSS feed, updated the way non-members log in and created a “print story” button that allows readers to print multiple page stories with one click, among other things.

Seeing this project through the entire process was very satisfying. My boss was willing to let my experiment and gave me time to work out problems beyond my experience. It was the single most challenging and rewarding thing I did at IRE.

One thing you will notice if you take the time to visit the site is that articles are subscription based only. Before 2007, Uplink was a magazine mailed out to subscribers. At the beginning of the year, IRE decided to make it a paperless magazine and made it available in PDF format only. This Web site is the magazine’s third reincarnation.
